The Hythe Yacht Club is one of the clubs which the remarkable development of small-class racing in the Solent called into being a few years ago. It was founded in 1893, and has had a most successful career. Its quarters—for the summer only—are situated on the end of Hythe Pier, and its races are started from the pier-end. This is the uppermost point on Southampton Water now at which racing ordinarily takes place. There are matches held every year at the Southampton Town Regatta, above the Royal Pier at that town, but with that exception boats are seldom seen above Hythe. The advantages of the position have been recognised in recent years by the Royal Southampton Club, which has started its small-class races from there, while the Royal Southern and the Southampton Corinthian Clubs have also used the Hythe course for their matches.
