St. Albans, The Duke of, William Amelius Aubrey de Vere Beauclerk

Tenth Duke of St. Albans. Was born in 1840, and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He purchased his first yacht, the Pilgrim(120-ton schooner), in 1863, and in the same year was elected a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He voyaged to the Mediterranean in that and the following seasons, when he bought the s.y. Xantha from the late Lord Alfred Paget. He next purchased the yawl Dream, and then the Ceres, 301 tons.
