The Earl of Arran was born in 1868, and educated at Eton, following a military career. He was for fifteen years connected with the ‘Blues’, being for a number of years Adjutant, and afterwards serving in the Egyptian army. He also served in the South African War, and now commands the Civil Service Rifles. His first yacht was the Neaira, 39 tons, which he used for cruising and racing. He owned Susan in 1899 and Windflower in 1900. The latter boat he sold before leaving this country for South Africa. He has also been the owner of several other vessels, and now owns Esther and Ban­shee. Lord Arran resides chiefly in Ireland.
